A hire car is highly recommended for the independent traveller....
Norfolk Island offers possibly the cheapest hire cars in the Pacific and while the Island is small, its steep hills would challenge even the best walkers. The Island presently does not have a public transport system with the exception of a taxi and there is little by way of street lighting.
A hire car gives you the independence ofdriving around the Island at your own pace and allows you to access our spectacular scenic coastline. Without a car how could you drive to Mt Pitt after dining out to stargaze the heavens in a crystal clear sky ~ AND there are no charges for parking ANYWHERE ON NORFOLK ISLAND!
The Norfolk Wave!
Remember to watch out for the "Norfolk Wave", a wave used by the Island locals to greet one another as they pass by. We love it when we get a response in kind! Driving is on the left, with a speed limit outside the Burnt Pine Shopping Centre of 50kph and inside the Shopping Centre of 30kph. When driving outside of the town, remember that cows and other animals have right of way.
