Norfolk Island has a Westminster style of parliamentary government introduced by the Norfolk Island Act 1979 (Australia) which established a nine member Legislative Assembly with the powers to "make laws for the peace, order and good governance of the Territory".

The Twelfth Legislative Assembly was elected on 21 March 2007 and sworn in on 28 March 2007.   Traditionally the Assembly meets on the third Wednesday of each month with special meetings called when circumstances demand.   The Legislative Assembly Chamber and Offices are housed in the Old Military Barracks at Kingston.

The Executive Council of Norfolk Island (the Norfolk Island Government) consisting of Ministers of the day and chaired by the Administrator of Norfolk Island, has a role similar to the Federal Executive Council of Australia.   The Administrator's role is somewhat analogous to that of a State Governor (Australian).

The powers of the Norfolk Island Government are very wide ranging.  The Government is responsible for programmes including health, education, welfare, revenue and customs.   It also takes overall responsibility for public infrastructure and for the delivery of services to the community through the Administration of Norfolk Island (Public Service).  The Commonwealth of Australia retains a power of advice and can veto some legislation.

Government enterprises provide most of the Island services, including telephone, post, electricity, health services and the airport.   These enterprises are effectively government businesses which provide both a service the community and, where possible, a source of revenue for the government.
